Full-time Crew Member Position
ABOUT THE FARM:
Lakeview Hill Farm is a certified organic produce farm in Traverse City, MI that specializes in greenhouse and hoophouse production. The farm supplies high quality vegetables to Traverse City and the surrounding area. The farm is committed to renewable energy, relying on 100% on-farm solar-powered electricity and utilizing a high efficiency gasification wood boiler to heat the farm and greenhouses. The small, diversified farm is operating in four 34 x148’ greenhouses, four caterpillar tunnels, and two acres of field production. The farm has year-round production of baby leaf greens, microgreens, and shoots, along with early season heirloom tomatoes and cucumbers.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
We are now hiring full-time crew members for the 2022 season. Farm crew members are the foundation of Lakeview Hill Farm and each employee will be a key member of the team. They will help on all aspects of the farm including transplanting, harvesting, washing, packing, weeding, trellising, pruning, and more. Crew members will gain experience of the production cycle on the farm and take part in group responsibilities and individual tasks. Ideally, farm crew member positions will be full-time for the entire season with potential to stay on longer depending on the farms needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Effectively and efficiently carry out day to day operations of the farm
Work directly with the farm owner, farm leads, and other crew members
Contribute on all aspects of the farm including: greenhouse work, field preparations, soil fertility, irrigation, cover cropping, planting, cultivating, harvesting, weeding, trellising, building new farm infrastructure, washing, and packing
Work the farmers markets and take care of Saturday chores (rotated among all employees every 3-4 weeks)
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Preferred 1 season of experience on another production farm or other applicable work experience
Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment
Interest in local, sustainable agriculture and farming practices
Must be a good listener and take direction well
Ability to work long hours in a fast-paced environment
Ability to work independently while staying motivated
Ability to work well on a team
Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform repetitive physical tasks in all types of weather conditions. (heat, rain, snow, etc.)
Must be organized and show attention to detail
Expected to arrive at work on time with a good attitude
Must be self-motivated and interested in learning new farming methods
Quality, speed, and efficiency are important
Experience operating a tractor and using hand held tools
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
JOB TERMS:
Start date is flexible (between mid-March and mid-May)
End date is flexible (between mid-August and October)
40-50 hours a week
There may be potential for year-round work and growth into “Lead” or Managerial roles based on the current needs of the farm.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
$16/hour, starting pay
-$100 Gear stipend (Reimbursement at end of season)
-Up to $600 bonus at the end of the season
-Access to fresh, seasonal produce
-Housing is not available
